Knife knowing you

"I'm absolutely sickened. I've never heard anything so disgraceful. He should lose his job." said Lyn Costello, co-founder of Mothers against Murder, in response to a judge getting out his own knife during a knife-wounding hearing to illustrate that opening the blade took two hands, not the one the defendant claimed. It was in the Metro but I can't find it online.

Who is this shrill zealot? To risk parroting the National Rifle Association (commonly called the NRA), knives don't kill people, people kill people. I've dozens of knives at home and not one has killed anybody because I've never put them to that purpose. I have a huge meat cleaver and two massive machetes, bought as much because I found them cool as their practical use. I've never used them against anyone nor have I any intention to (excepting perhaps any burglar stupid enough to catch me at home). Are my actions "disgusting"? What about in my more foolish moments when I wave them around and make swishing noises? Stupid but pretty innocent in the grand scheme of the human condition.

Knife crime is a major issue and one that we seem to be failing to tackle. I'm not sure what the solution is. Tough sentencing is definitely the right way forward, but then I feel we need that on most crimes. One slightly less conventional solution that rattles around my brain is teaching kids how to fight with their hands and feet such that they can pour scorn on those that require weaponry. This could be complemented by putting up posters in town centres with pictures of knife-users and captions such as "This guy's such a wuss that he stabbed an unarmed kid. Perhaps his five year stay in prison will toughen him up some." As I said, not very conventional, but I've had it with these wimps pretending to be hard simply because they've got a blade. I appreciate the electric thrill that accompanies wielding a blade but we need to hammer home that this false bravado should never be confused with real machismo.

Update - This post has been superseded by a clarification post found here.

My son was the victim of knife crime while on a crowded bus at 5.30pm riding through your constituency and to call a knife "cool" stinks of immaturity. I had to visit my son in casualty at PGI where he was covered in blood from a gaping knife wound to his skull and he also had boot imprints on his face where they had kicked him. If I were you I would choose to re-phrase the "cool" idea. Also when my son was at infants school he used to think scars were "cool" not any more!!! I am staying anonymous so my son does not have to have anymore upset than necessary I hope you never have to go through what we have had to.

My sympathies to you and your son. I agree my phrasing was poor but I am not ignorant of the dangers of knife crime, I too have had those close to me hurt at the end of a blade. I hope he recovers soon.

He doesn't 'wave them round and make swishing noises' because he's a serial killer...are you people stupid? He's obviously - like many people are - interested in large blades such as machetes, and said 'cool' to attempt to get through to some of the neanderthals out there who are lacking in advanced vocabulary. I mean, for goodness' sake, surely even the worst of you out there can get your heads around what he's saying? Or am I just obscenely naive to expect that there are more than half a dozen people out there that boast IQs higher than that of a beetle?

I see nothing wrong in owning knives - or firearms for that matter - & as you rightly say, it is their misuse that is the problem.
Unless & until Society is prepared to see a lot more people locked up for longer, we shall continue to suffer from the depredations of the feral portion of the populace.

I'm not surprised at the response from the Daily Mirror, as their belief that more Government interference in our lives is a good thing is ingrained into the Socialist mindset - anyone who dares to have independent thoughts is suspect & deserving of vilification.

If more of the Conservative Party thought as you do, then I might even be tempted to vote again...

...but only if Patrick Mercer is chosen to lead the Conservatives.

Your views are very similar to my own. I feel that knives, swords and other such items can be looked upon and admired. Knives can be traced back to the first descendants of mankind. The implemants were used to mankinds advantage. Knife crime now is seemingly out of proportion due to media influences.

Also I do like the sound of a sword or knife shishing through the air, BUT this doesn't mean that I promote Knife crime.

I believe that you, like many others have been the victim of the media's harsh remarks. They have twisted a seemingly innocent blog regarding your own opinions to make it sound like it's promoting something it simply is not.
